Early Grave: Tomorrow I am you
28/07/08 || Lord K Philipson
Earl Grey? What the fuck? If someone actually tells me that they like early Grave I will have to think twice if they are completely fucked in the head or if they are referring to the Swedish death metal fuckbunch… Confusing. Fuck you for that. Anyways, a few weeks ago GD received a huge package from Rising Records, England. 7 fucken cd’s with bands like Impiety, Infernal Execrator, Many Things Untold, No Quarter Given, Sworn Amongst, Trigger The Bloodshed and the one that is covered here: Early Grave. We thank Rising Records for their support and hope we won’t have to piss on each and every release. That will remain to be seen though, I guess. Reading the attached biographies don’t exactly put my hopes up high, lemme put it like that…
First out is this band from Peterborough, a unit that Rising Records love to point out has an average age of 17. If Early Grave really had the talent of a band like Decapitated (with their killer debut album) I would understand the reason of pointing out the average age, but Early Grave do not possess that talent. Not yet anyways. These kids have got a long way to go before they make themselves a name in the already overcrowded scene.
First off they’ll need to learn the value of a good production and the fact that having annoying clickety-fucken-click bassdrums as the primal focus in the mix is not what made bands like Metallica what they are today. They will hopefully also learn that mixing all kinds of style without precision and thought is not working in the longrun. Too much misplaced clean singing with a majority of metalcore influences among some death metal festivities and a few (more or less) thrash metal riffs. Early Grave feels very unfocused and can only get better with time.
They are not completely (only close) shit and show some potential every now and then, they just need to cut down on their formula and realize that mixing all these styles together (don’t forget the hideous Biohazardish choruses and/or bridges popping up) isn’t working very well.
And nope, tomorrow you won’t be me. I’ll still be me – creating awesome music, being frighteningly great looking and full of endless talent. You’ll still be Early Grave, a quite sucky bunch. I win.
